I eventually discovered that Windows had thoughtfully "tidied up" the desktop by moving them into a folder called Desktop! There were several in there from recent updates. Copy the contents of the folder from OneDrive into the Desktop folder in File Explorer and they should reappear on the desktop once more.

Just wondering as i just got a new windows 10 multiple desktops no icons free with Windows 11 if i can install different icon shortcuts in different desktops. It appears each new desktop clones the icons from the last.
